On January 13th, 1968, Bill Masterton was fatally injured during a game while playing for the Minnesota North Stars. After hitting his head on the ice, he was rushed to the hospital where he tragically died two days later. The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy was created in his honour, and is awarded to the “player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey”.
